How to Become a Dental Assistant in Bigelow Arkansas

Bigelow AR dental assistant working with dentistChoosing the right dental assistant school near Bigelow AR is an essential first step toward launching your new career in dentistry. But before you can make your selection, you must analyze and compare your school options. There is far more to performing your due diligence than picking the dental assistant program with the least expensive tuition or enrolling in the one that is nearest to your home. There are other important issues to consider also, including the program’s accreditation and reputation. Your first step is to decide which of the two credentials you are most interested in obtaining training for, which may depend on the amount of money and time that you have to commit. The most typical dental assistant program generally takes about 1 year to complete for a diploma or certificate. Meanwhile dental assistants may also earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from 2 to 3 years to complete. Obviously with the more extensive training comes more expense. We will explore all of these issues and supplemental questions that you should be asking the dental assistant schools you are evaluating later in this article. But first, let’s look at the duties of dental assistants and further discuss the training options offered.

The Role of a Dental Assistant in Bigelow AR

Bigelow AR dental assistant and oral surgeonDental assistants are an integral component of any Bigelow AR dental practice and can carry out a variety of duties. Their principal job description is to provide assistance to the dentists and the administrative staff. In other words, to help keep the practice running efficiently. Many dental assistants opt to specialize and obtain certification in a specific area, for instance pediatrics. However the majority of assistants carry out any duty that they are called upon to complete, including:

  • Setting and confirming appointments
  • Prepping patients for teeth cleanings and treatments
  • Preparing and sterilizing instruments for dentists
  • Clearing patients’ mouths with suction equipment
  • Supplying instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Readying X-ray machines and handling X-rays
  • Purchasing dental and office supplies

Certification and licensing requirements for dental assistants vary by state, so consult with the Arkansas dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants working with X-ray machines most likely will have to be licensed and certified. Many dental assistants who are either required or elect to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Assistant Training Options near Bigelow AR

Dental assistant courses are available at Arkansas junior colleges as well as trade or vocational schools. As previously mentioned, the most typical credential acquired is the certificate, which generally takes about one year to finish. There are fewer Associate Degree programs offered, and they furnish a more extensive education, including general subjects in addition to the dental assisting classes. These programs can take anywhere from 2 to as long as 3 years to finish and must be accredited by the CDA in virtually every state. They are also offered in Arkansas vocational schools and community colleges. Whether you are pursuing earning a certificate or a degree as a dental assistant, there will be a clinical component to the training as well. A number of programs also offer internships with Bigelow AR dental practices or dentists.

Dental Assistant Online Training Programs

attending dental assistant school online in Bigelow ARChoosing an online dental assistant course can be a good option for obtaining your training. Just keep in mind that the classes will not be totally online, since there will be a clinical portion to your training. But the remainder of your classes will be provided via your desktop computer in the comfort of your Bigelow AR home or elsewhere on your tablet or laptop. For those continuing to work while attending college, online dental programs make education far more accessible. Some may even offer lower tuition costs than their on-campus competitors. And supplementary expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be reduced also. The clinical training can often be performed at an area dental office or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything required to receive the proper education is furnished. If you have the dedication for this mode of learning, you may find that enrolling in an dental hygienist online college is the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Dental Assistant Colleges

As we covered at the beginning of this article, a number of students begin by looking at the cost and the location of the colleges. Maybe they search for some online alternatives as well. Even though these may be important initial factors to consider, there are several additional questions that you need to address to the Bigelow AR area programs you are comparing in order to arrive at an informed decision. Toward that end, we have provided a list of questions to assist you with your evaluation and final selection of the ideal dental hygienist program for you.

Is the Dental Assistant College Accredited? There are a number of valid reasons why you should only pick an accredited dental assistant program. If you are planning to become licensed or certified, then accreditation is a condition in virtually all states. In order to take the Certified Dental Assistant examination, your dental college must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps ensure that the training you get is of the highest quality and comprehensive. Employers in Bigelow AR frequently desire or require that new hires are graduates of accredited colleges. And last, if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, usually they are not provided for non-accredited Arkansas colleges.

Is The Correct Dental Program Available? You can choose to train to become a dental assistant by earning either a Certificate or an Associate Degree. Just make certain that the Bigelow AR college you select offers the program that you want. However, keep in mind that even if a school has an exceptional reputation as well as accreditation does not mean each one of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited school may have a solid accredited dental hygienist program, but may have a weaker or non-accredited dental assistant program. So if you are primarily interested in a dental assistant degree, obviously it would not be the best college for you.

Is Enough Practical Training Included? Clinical or practical training is an important portion of any dental training program. This holds true for the online school options also. Many dental colleges have associations with regional dental practices and clinics that provide clinical training for their students. It’s not only essential that the college you select offers sufficient clinical hours but also provides them in the type of practice that you ultimately want to work in. For example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, verify that the Bigelow AR area  program you enroll in offers clinical rotation in a regional dental office that focuses on dental services for children.

Is There an Internship Program? Find out if the dental programs you are looking at have internship programs. Internships are probably the ideal method to get hands-on, clinical experience in a real Bigelow AR dental practice. They help students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students create professional relationships in the local dentistry community. And they look good on resumes also.

Is Job Placement Help Offered? Many graduating students of dental assistant schools require help obtaining their first job. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Colleges with higher job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the Bigelow AR dental profession in addition to large networks of contacts where they can place their students for employment or internships.

Are Classes Small? Check with the Bigelow AR area programs you are evaluating how big typically their classrooms are. The smaller classes generally offer a more personal atmosphere for learning where students have increased access to the teachers. Conversely, larger classes often are impersonal and offer little one-on-one instruction. If feasible, find out if you can monitor a couple of classes at the college that you are most interested in in order to witness first hand the degree of interaction between teachers and students before enrolling.

What is the Overall Cost of the Program? Dental assistant training can fluctuate in cost based on the length of the program and the volume of clinical training provided. Other factors, such as the reputations of the schools and if they are public or private also come into play. But in addition to the tuition there are other substantial costs which can add up. They can include costs for such things as textbooks and commuting as well as school materials, equipment and supplies. So when examining the cost of colleges, remember to add all of the costs related to your education. Most colleges have financial assistance departments, so be sure to check out what is available as far as loans, grants and scholarships in Bigelow AR.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before selecting a dental college, you need to verify that the assistant program furnishes classes that accommodate your schedule. This is particularly true if you will be working while receiving your education and have to go to classes near your Bigelow AR home at nights or on weekends. And even if you choose an online college, you will still be required to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up policy is if you should need to miss any classes because of illness, work or family issues.
