How to Become a Dental Assistant in Camden Arkansas

Camden AR dental assistant working with dentistPicking the right dental assistant program near Camden AR is an important first step toward launching your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your choice, you must assess and compare your school options. There is far more to completing your due diligence than choosing the dental assistant school with the least expensive tuition or enrolling in the one that is nearest to your residence. There are other crucial issues to consider as well, including the school’s reputation and accreditation. Your first step is to decide which of the 2 credentials you are most interested in getting training for, which may be contingent on the amount of money and time that you have to invest. The most common dental assistant program usually takes about 12 months to finish for a diploma or certificate. However dental assistants may also earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from 2 to 3 years to finish. Naturally with the more extensive training comes more cost. We will talk about all of these concerns and additional questions that you should be asking the dental assistant schools you are assessing later in this article. But first, let’s review the duties of dental assistants and further discuss the training options offered.

The Job of a Dental Assistant in Camden AR

Camden AR dental assistant and oral surgeonDental assistants are an integral component of any Camden AR dental practice and can carry out a myriad of duties. Their main job description is to give assistance to the dentists and the administrative staff. In other words, to help keep the practice running successfully. Many dental assistants elect to specialize and acquire certification in a particular area, for example periodontics. However the majority of assistants carry out any task that they are asked to fulfill, for example:

  • Scheduling and verifying appointments
  • Prepping patients for teeth cleanings and treatments
  • Sterilizing and preparing instruments for dentists
  • Using suction equipment to clear patients’ mouths
  • Providing instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Readying X-ray machines and handling X-rays
  • Ordering office and dental supplies

Certification and licensing requirements for dental assistants vary by state, so consult with the Arkansas dental board for your state’s regulations. Assistants dealing with X-ray machines more than likely will have to be licensed and certified. A large number of dental assistants who are either required or opt to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Assistant Education Options near Camden AR

Dental assistant courses are available at Arkansas community colleges in addition to technical or vocational schools. As previously mentioned, the most common credential earned is the certificate, which usually takes about a year to complete. There are less Associate Degree programs available, and they furnish a more expansive education, incorporating general subjects in addition to the dental assisting courses. These programs can take anywhere from 2 to as long as 3 years to complete and must be accredited by the CDA in nearly every state. They are also offered in Arkansas trade schools and community colleges. Regardless of whether you are interested in earning a certificate or a degree as a dental assistant, there will be a clinical component to the training as well. A number of programs also sponsor internships with Camden AR dental practices or dentists.

Dental Assistant Online Training Programs

attending dental assistant school online in Camden ARSelecting an online dental assistant course may be a good option for getting your education. Just remember that the program will not be 100% online, since there will be a practical portion to your training. But the rest of your classes will be provided via your desktop computer in the convenience of your Camden AR home or anywhere else on your laptop or tablet. For those working while going to school, online dental programs make education a lot more accessible. Some may even have lower tuition fees than their on-campus counterparts. And added expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be lessened as well. The clinical training can usually be completed at a community dental practice or in an on-campus lab. With both the online and clinical training, everything required to get the appropriate education is furnished. If you have the discipline for this style of learning, you may find that attending an online dental hygienist program is the best choice for you.

Issues to Ask Dental Assistant Programs

As we covered at the beginning of this article, many students start by looking at the location and the cost of the schools. Possibly they search for several online alternatives as well. Although these may be important initial considerations, there are several additional questions that you need to address to the Camden AR area programs you are reviewing in order to make an informed decision. Toward that end, we have furnished a list of questions to help you with your evaluation and final selection of the right dental hygienist school for you.

Is the Dental Assistant College Accredited? There are many important reasons why you should only enroll in an accredited dental assistant college. If you are intending to become licensed or certified, then accreditation is a condition in almost all states. To qualify to take the Certified Dental Assistant examination, your dental school must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps guarantee that the education you get is of the highest quality and comprehensive. Employers in Camden AR typically desire or require that new hires are graduates of accredited colleges. And finally, if you are requesting financial aid or a student loan, frequently they are not offered for non-accredited Arkansas colleges.

Is The Appropriate Dental Program Available? You can opt to train to become a dental assistant by earning either a Certificate or an Associate Degree. Just verify that the Camden AR school you choose has the program that you want. However, keep in mind that just because a college has an excellent reputation and accreditation does not mean each one of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited college may have a solid accredited dental hygienist program, but may have a weaker or non-accredited dental assistant program. So if you are primarily interested in a dental assistant degree, clearly it would not be the ideal college for you.

Is Enough Practical Training Included? Clinical or practical training is a necessary portion of every dental training program. This is true for the online college options as well. A number of dental schools have partnerships with regional dental offices and clinics that furnish practical training for their students. It’s not only important that the school you choose provides enough clinical hours but also provides them in the type of practice that you subsequently would like to work in. For example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, confirm that the Camden AR area  school you choose offers clinical rotation in a regional dental office that specializes in dental treatment for children.

Are Internships Available? Find out if the dental schools you are considering have an internship program. Internships are probably the best method to obtain hands-on, practical experience in a professional Camden AR dental practice. They help students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students develop working relationships in the professional dental community. And they are attractive on resumes as well.

Is Job Placement Assistance Provided? Many students that have graduated from dental assistant schools need assistance landing their first job. Find out if the schools you are researching have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Schools with high job placement rates probably have excellent reputations within the Camden AR dental community as well as extensive networks of contacts where they can refer their students for internships or employment.

Are Classes Small? Check with the Camden AR area colleges you are evaluating how large typically their classes are. The smaller classes generally offer a more intimate environment for learning where students have greater access to the instructors. On the other hand, bigger classes tend to be impersonal and offer little individualized instruction. If practical, ask if you can attend a few classes at the school that you are leaning toward so that you can witness first hand the amount of interaction between students and instructors before making a commitment.

What is the Overall Expense of the Program? Dental assistant training can vary in cost dependent on the duration of the program and the amount of clinical training provided. Other factors, for example the reputations of the colleges and whether they are private or public also have an impact. But along with the tuition there are other substantial costs which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as commuting and textbooks as well as school materials, equipment and supplies. So when examining the cost of colleges, remember to add all of the costs associated with your education. Most colleges have financial aid departments, so be sure to check out what is available as far as loans, grants and scholarships in Camden AR.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before enrolling in a dental college, you must confirm that the assistant program provides classes that fit your schedule. This is particularly true if you will be working while receiving your education and must go to classes near your Camden AR home at nights or on weekends. And even if you choose an online program, you will still be required to schedule your clinical training classes. Also, while making your inquiries, ask what the make-up protocol is if you should need to miss any classes due to illness, work or family issues.

Following is some interesting background information about Camden Arkansas that you may find helpful.

Camden, Arkansas

In 2000, Camden had a population of 13,154, but it lost 7.4 percent of its residents and recorded 12,183 in 2010. The municipality in 2010 was 56 percent African American.[3] Camden is the principal city of the Camden Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Ouachita and Calhoun counties.

Indigenous peoples of various cultures lived along the rivers of Arkansas for thousands of years and created complex societies. Mississippian culture peoples built massive earthwork mounds along the Ouachita River, beginning circa 1000.

The region was part of French Louisiana from 1682-1762. The Indians who had given their name to the river had died out or moved on by the mid-1700s. The land along the Ouachita River was inhabited by remnants of several Indian tribes, and the river was home to a small population of mostly French hunters, trappers and traders. Then, in 1763, Spain acquired Louisiana by treaty, but the culture remained decidedly French. After the American Revolution, Spanish Governor Bernardo de Gálvez decided to establish a military post on the upper Ouachita as a buffer between US and Spanish territory. He appointed a Frenchman named Jean-Baptiste Filhiol (Don Juan Filhiol) to be the commandant of the new post. In 1782, Filhiol chose an old, established center of trade called Ecore à Fabri (Fabri's Bluff) located high above the Ouachita River at present-day Camden. This was the first attempt at a European settlement on the Ouachita. The nomadic inhabitants had no interest in an agrarian lifestyle, and efforts to attract settlers from elsewhere failed. A few years later, Filhiol moved the Ouachita Post down the river to Prairie des Canots, now Monroe, Louisiana.[4]
