How to Become a Dental Assistant in Elba Alabama

Elba AL dental assistant working with dentistChoosing the ideal dental assistant training course near Elba AL is an essential initial step toward launching your new career in dentistry. But before you can make your selection, you must examine and compare your school options. There is much more to doing your due diligence than selecting the dental assistant college with the most affordable tuition or enrolling in the one that is closest to your home. There are other crucial factors to take into account also, such as the school’s reputation and accreditation. Your first step is to decide which of the two credentials you are most interested in receiving training for, which may depend on the amount of money and time that you have to commit. The most common dental assistant program normally takes about one year to finish for a certificate or diploma. However dental assistants may also earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from two to three years to finish. Naturally with the lengthier training comes more expense. We will cover all of these concerns and supplemental questions that you should be asking the dental assistant schools you are assessing later in this article. But first, let’s review the roles of dental assistants and further discuss the training options provided.

The Role of a Dental Assistant in Elba AL

Elba AL dental assistant and oral surgeonDental assistants are an integral part of any Elba AL dental office and can perform a multitude of tasks. Their fundamental job description is to give support to the dentists and the administrative staff. In other words, to help keep the practice operating successfully. A number of dental assistants choose to specialize and earn certification in a particular area, for instance orthodontics. Even so most assistants perform any duty that they are called upon to complete, such as:

  • Scheduling and confirming appointments
  • Prepping patients for teeth cleanings and treatments
  • Preparing and sterilizing dental instruments
  • Using suction equipment to clear patients’ mouths
  • Giving instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Preparing X-ray machines and handling X-rays
  • Purchasing office and dental supplies

Certification and licensing requirements for dental assistants differ by state, so consult with the Alabama dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants working with X-ray machines most likely will need to be licensed and certified. Most dental assistants who are either required or elect to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam provided by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Assistant Education Programs near Elba AL

Dental assistant programs are offered at Alabama junior colleges along with technical or vocational schools. As previously mentioned, the most frequent credential earned is the certificate, which generally takes about a year to complete. There are less Associate Degree programs available, and they furnish a more comprehensive education, including general subjects in addition to the dental assistant courses. These programs can require anywhere from 2 to as long as 3 years to complete and must be accredited by the CDA in nearly every state. They are also offered in Alabama trade schools and community colleges. Whether you are interested in earning a certificate or a degree as a dental assistant, there will be a clinical component to the training also. Many programs also offer internships with Elba AL dentists or dental practices.

Online Dental Assistant Programs

attending dental assistant school online in Elba ALChoosing an online dental assistant school can be a good alternative for getting your education. Just remember that the classes will not be completely online, since there will be a practical component to your training. But the rest of your classes will be available by means of your personal computer in the comfort of your Elba AL home or anywhere else on your tablet or laptop. For those working while going to school, online dental classes make education far more obtainable. Some may even have lower tuition costs than their on-campus counterparts. And supplementary expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be reduced as well. The clinical training can typically be performed at an area dental practice or in an on-campus lab. With both the online and clinical training, everything necessary to get the appropriate education is provided. If you have the discipline for this method of education, you might find that enrolling in an dental hygienist online program is the ideal option for you.

Issues to Ask Dental Assistant Programs

As we discussed at the beginning of this article, many prospective students begin by checking out the cost and the location of the colleges. Possibly they search for some online options as well. Even though these are important initial points to consider, there are several additional questions that you should address to the Elba AL area programs you are reviewing in order to make an informed decision. To start that process, we have provided a list of questions to help you with your due diligence and ultimate selection of the best dental hygienist program for you.

Is the Dental Assistant School Accredited? There are many valid reasons why you should only enroll in an accredited dental assistant program. If you are intending to become certified or licensed, then accreditation is a requirement in virtually all states. To qualify to take the Certified Dental Assistant exam, your dental school must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps guarantee that the education you get is comprehensive and of the highest quality. Employers in Elba AL typically desire or require that new hires are graduates of accredited programs. And finally, if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, frequently they are not offered for non-accredited Alabama colleges.

Is The Proper Dental Program Available? You can elect to train to become a dental assistant by earning either a Certificate or an Associate Degree. Just make certain that the Elba AL college you decide on has the program that you want. However, keep in mind that even if a college has a good reputation and accreditation does not mean each one of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited college may have a solid accredited dental hygienist program, but could have a weaker or non-accredited dental assistant program. So if you are primarily interested in a dental assistant degree, clearly it would not be the ideal school for you.

Is Adequate Practical Training Provided? Clinical or practical training is an essential portion of every dental training program. This applies for the online school options as well. Most dental colleges have relationships with regional dental offices and clinics that provide clinical training for their students. It’s not only imperative that the program you enroll in offers sufficient clinical hours but also provides them in the kind of practice that you subsequently want to work in. As an example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, check that the Elba AL area  college you select offers clinical rotation in a local dental office that focuses on dental treatment for children.

Are Internships Available? Ask if the dental programs you are exploring have an internship program. Internships are undoubtedly the most effective method to obtain hands-on, practical experience in a real Elba AL dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students develop working relationships in the professional dental community. And they look good on resumes also.

Is Job Placement Support Offered? Most students that have graduated from dental assistant colleges require help getting their first job. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Colleges with high job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the Elba AL dental community in addition to large networks of contacts where they can place their students for internships or employment.

Are Classrooms Small? Check with the Elba AL area schools you are looking at how large typically their classes are. The smaller classes tend to provide a more intimate setting for training where students have greater access to the instructors. Conversely, bigger classes can be impersonal and provide little one-on-one instruction. If practical, find out if you can sit in on a few classes at the school that you are leaning toward so that you can experience first hand the amount of interaction between instructors and students before enrolling.

What is the Overall Cost of the Program? Dental assistant colleges can fluctuate in cost based on the duration of the program and the volume of clinical training provided. Other variables, such as the reputations of the colleges and if they are private or public also come into play. But along with the tuition there are other substantial expenses which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as textbooks and commuting as well as school materials, equipment and supplies. So when comparing the cost of schools, remember to include all of the expenses associated with your education. Most colleges have financial assistance offices, so make sure to check out what is available as far as loans, grants and scholarships in Elba AL.

Are the Classes Convenient? Before enrolling in a dental college, you must make sure that the assistant program offers classes that suit your schedule. This is particularly true if you continue working while receiving your education and need to attend classes near your Elba AL home at nights or on weekends. And even if you choose an online college, you will still have to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while making your inquiries, ask what the make-up practice is if you should need to miss any classes because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

Elba, Alabama

Elba is a city in Coffee County, Alabama, United States. At the time of the 2010 U.S. census, its population was 3,940.[3] Elba is part of the Enterprise micropolitan statistical area. Elba is the official county seat of Coffee County, though there are two county courthouses, with the other one being located in the town of Enterprise.

The town which eventually became Elba originated near a ferry across the Pea River in the early 1830s. Originally called Bridgeville, a U.S. post office was established in the town by 1841. In 1851, a lottery to determine a new name for the town was held. One citizen had been reading a biography of Napoleon Bonaparte, and his suggestion of "Elba" as its name was the winner when it was drawn from a hat before any of the other suggestions. Elba became the county seat of Coffee County in 1852.[4]

A logging railroad first reached Elba on March 20, 1892, with the first permanent rail line arriving in October 1898. The "Dorsey Trailer Company" was constructed at the end of this railroad line, and this company manufactured the highway trailers that served on railroads and highways starting with the piggyback railroad or containerized cargo boom of the second half of the 20th century. The new railroad line ended in West Elba, where the "New Town" industrial section of the town was located. The Seaboard System Railroad ceased all railroad service to Elba, including freight service, on November 27, 1984.[5]
