How to Become a Dental Assistant in Lineville Alabama

Lineville AL dental assistant working with dentistSelecting the ideal dental assistant program near Lineville AL is an important first step toward starting your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your selection, you must analyze and compare your school options. There is far more to completing your due diligence than choosing the dental assistant training with the least expensive tuition or enrolling in the one that is nearest to your home. There are other crucial issues to consider as well, such as the school’s accreditation and reputation. Your initial step is to decide which of the two credentials you are most interested in receiving training for, which may be contingent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest. The most common dental assistant program usually takes about 1 year to finish for a certificate or diploma. On the other hand dental assistants may also earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from two to three years to accomplish. Obviously with the prolonged training comes more cost. We will explore all of these considerations and supplemental questions that you need to be asking the dental assistant schools you are assessing later in this article. But first, let’s review the duties of dental assistants and further discuss the training options provided.

The Role of a Dental Assistant in Lineville AL

Lineville AL dental assistant and oral surgeonDental assistants are an essential part of any Lineville AL dental practice and can undertake a multitude of duties. Their principal job description is to provide support to the admin staff and the dentists. Or simply put, to help keep the practice running successfully. A number of dental assistants choose to specialize and obtain certification in a particular area, for example periodontics. However most assistants perform any duty that they are called upon to complete, for example:

  • Scheduling and confirming appointments
  • Prepping patients for teeth cleanings and treatments
  • Preparing and sterilizing instruments for dentists
  • Clearing patients’ mouths with suction equipment
  • Providing instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Preparing X-ray machines and processing X-rays
  • Ordering dental and office supplies

Certification and licensing requirements for dental assistants vary by state, so consult with the Alabama dental board for your state’s regulations. Assistants handling X-ray machines more than likely will have to be licensed and certified. Many dental assistants who are either required or choose to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination provided by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Assistant Education Options near Lineville AL

Dental assistant programs are provided at Alabama junior colleges along with trade or vocational schools. As previously mentioned, the most typical credential acquired is the certificate, which ordinarily takes about a year to finish. There are less Associate Degree programs offered, and they furnish a more extensive education, including general subjects in addition to the dental assisting courses. These programs can take anywhere from two to as long as three years to complete and must be accredited by the CDA in virtually every state. They are also offered in Alabama community colleges and technical schools. Whether you are interested in earning a certificate or a degree as a dental assistant, there will be a clinical aspect to the training as well. Many programs also offer internships with Lineville AL dental practices or dentists.

Dental Assistant Online Training

But the remainder of your classes will be available by means of your personal computer in the convenience of your Lineville AL home or elsewhere on your tablet or laptop. For those working while attending school, online dental classes make education far more accessible. Some may even charge lower tuition costs than their traditional counterparts. And additional expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be lessened as well. The practical training can often be performed at an area dental practice or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything required to get the proper education is provided. If you have the discipline for this style of education, you might find that attending an dental hygienist online school is the ideal option for you.

Issues to Ask Dental Assistant Colleges

As we covered at the beginning of this article, a number of students begin by looking at the location and the cost of the colleges. Perhaps they search for some online alternatives as well. Even though these may be relevant initial points to consider, there are several additional questions that you should address to the Lineville AL area programs you are comparing in order to reach an informed decision. To start that process, we have included a list of questions to help you with your due diligence and final selection of the best dental hygienist college for you.

Is the Dental Assistant College Accredited? There are several valid reasons why you should only select an accredited dental assistant program. If you are planning to become certified or licensed, then accreditation is a prerequisite in almost all states. In order to take the Certified Dental Assistant examination, your dental college must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps establish that the training you receive is comprehensive and of the highest quality. Employers in Lineville AL often desire or require that new hires are graduates of accredited schools. And last, if you are applying for financial aid or a student loan, often they are not obtainable for non-accredited Alabama colleges.

Is The Proper Dental Program Offered? You can decide to train to become a dental assistant by earning either a Certificate or an Associate Degree. Just confirm that the Lineville AL college you select offers the program that’s right for you. However, keep in mind that even if a school has an excellent reputation as well as accreditation does not mean each one of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited school may have a solid accredited dental hygienist program, but may have a weaker or non-accredited dental assistant program. So if you are primarily interested in a dental assistant degree, naturally it would not be the best college for you.

Is Adequate Practical Training Provided? Clinical or practical training is a vital part of every dental training program. This holds true for the online school options as well. Many dental schools have associations with regional dental offices and clinics that furnish practical training for their students. It’s not only essential that the school you enroll in offers adequate clinical hours but also provides them in the kind of practice that you ultimately want to work in. As an example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, check that the Lineville AL area  college you enroll in offers clinical rotation in a local dental practice that specializes in dental services for children.

Are Internships Available? Ask if the dental colleges you are evaluating have internship programs. Internships are undoubtedly the best method to receive hands-on, clinical experience in a professional Lineville AL dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students establish professional relationships in the local dentistry community. And they are attractive on resumes as well.

Is Job Placement Assistance Offered? Most students that have graduated from dental assistant schools require help landing their first job. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs, and what their job placement rates are. Programs with high job placement rates probably have excellent reputations within the Lineville AL dental profession in addition to extensive networks of contacts where they can position their students for employment or internships.

Are the Classes Small? Check with the Lineville AL area programs you are interested in how large on average their classes are. The smaller classes generally offer a more intimate environment for training where students have increased access to the instructors. On the other hand, bigger classes often are impersonal and offer little one-on-one instruction. If practical, find out if you can monitor a couple of classes at the college that you are leaning toward in order to witness first hand the degree of interaction between students and teachers before making a commitment.

What is the Entire Cost of the Program? Dental assistant training can vary in cost based on the length of the program and the amount of practical training provided. Other variables, such as the reputations of the colleges and whether they are public or private also come into play. But along with the tuition there are other significant expenses which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as textbooks and commuting as well as school equipment, materials and supplies. So when comparing the cost of colleges, don’t forget to add all of the costs related to your education. Most colleges have financial assistance offices, so be sure to ask what is available as far as grants, loans and scholarships in Lineville AL.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before selecting a dental college, you must confirm that the assistant program provides classes that accommodate your schedule. This is particularly true if you continue working while receiving your education and need to attend classes near your Lineville AL home in the evenings or on weekends. And even if you choose an online school, you will still have to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up policy is if you should need to miss any classes because of illness, work or family responsibilities.

Following is some interesting background information about Lineville Alabama that you may find helpful.

Lineville, Alabama

Native Americans were the first to inhabit the area now known as Lineville. The Creek Indian War of 1813, however, resulted in their removal. The first white settlers in the area were William and Thomas Lundie. Their settlement became known as Lundie's Cross Roads after a trading post opened in the 1830s to serve pioneers and miners searching for gold. In 1856, Lundie's Cross Roads became known as County Line, probably for the Baptist Church, founded in 1848 and located on what was then the boundary line between Talladega and Randolph counties. Also in 1856, a post office was established in County Line, schools were consolidated and corn and cotton became cash crops.[4]

The Town of (Crooked Creek) Lineville was built on what was at that time the dividing line between Talladega and Randolph Counties, hence the name, Lineville. John H. Ingram, Sr. of Lineville, Alabama furnishes the following early history: “Crooked Creek Baptist Church, later Lineville, was organized in 1839 and built one and one quarter miles west of the town of Lineville about 200 yards northwest of the home of Frank Pittard; and the first literary school of the community was nearby. Some years later the church was moved a short distance and a house was built on the left side of the public road near the residence of the late Thomas H. Harris. In about 1863 the church was moved into the town of Lineville and a house built just west of the present grammar school building; the name was changed to Lineville Baptist Church in 1881 and legally incorporated in 1912; the first Circuit Court that was held in the new County of Clay, was held in the Lineville Baptist Church in 1867, with John Henderson of Talladega, Alabama, as a judge. The present new brick building was built in 1915 and 1916, with the first service held on March 1st, 1916, with prayer and thanksgiving service conducted by J.H. Ingram, Sr., and C.N. James, pastor.”[5]

One of the newest attractions in Clay County in the 1920s, was the chicken business. Millions of chickens and eggs and long chicken houses In or about 1921, Reverend Secelar Claxton Ray took one hundred, day-old chicks to the Clay County Fair and put them under an oil burning brooder and called attention to the advantage of using chickens on the farm to supplement the ‘all cotton’ cash crop. This was something new, but it did gradually got the attention of the local farmers. He was now fully in the poultry business, and named it Goodwill Poultry Farm and Hatchery. He bought houses then idle at the local graphite mines in Clay County and hired neighbors in their spare time and built the hatchery and chicken houses and an extra tenant house on the farm, southeast of Ashland, Alabama whose population of close to one thousand had grown considerably from two hundred in 1881.[6]
